Hearing and Communication - Surabaya HEARING AND COMMUNICATION CENTER SURABAYA The Surabaya’s Hearing and Communication Center (HCC) is one of the public hearing center at Dr. Soetomo General Hospital as the biggest hospital in eastern part of Indonesia. The activities begun in 1975 and it was enabled by grant from NUFFIC (Netherland University Foundation for International Project Cooperation). The project set up equipment (audiometers), 3 booth rooms and provided expert/technical guides. The infrastructure/building and manpower provided by Dr. Soetomo hospital and Airlangga University. To improve hearing services especially for children, the Rotary East Java Hearing Project (matching grant of Rotary Western Australia and Surabaya) provided more equipment and hearing aids. Joint operation with provider hearing services to complete the management of hearing impaired patients (diagnostic and (re)habilitation). Following then HCC was officially opened on July 15th, 2002. Professor JI Suzuki from hearing International Japan donated the Instrument for otology operative and ear microscope on 2002 and 2003. Intended for optimized the treatment of otitis media. The Activities I. Public Service 1. Examination of hearing level T-fork test and whisper test, screening for students and employers Pure tone, Speech, Impedans, Tone Decay/SISI test Behavioral Observation Audiometry/Play Audiometry for children Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR), Oto Acoustic Emmision (OAE) 2. Vestibular test, eg. Caloric test, Romberg test, etc. 3. Fitting hearing aid 4. Speech therapy for children and adult Auditory verbal therapy/multi sensory approach Oesophageal speech for patient after laryngectomy 5. Otologic division: Tympanoplasty, radical mastoidectomy, tympano mastoidectomy, myringoplasty II. Education 1. Residents : Clinical audiology, Temporal bone laboratory, Performing mastoidectomy 2. Students : The rule of audiometry and ear diseases 3. Nurses : Audiometry technicians 4. Teachers of the deaf school : Medical management of the deaf children 5. GP/ENT specialist : Early detection and intervention of deafness 6. Public/deaf children’s parents : Seminar of hearing aid, cochlear implant, auditory verbal therapy (AVT) III. Research/Public Service 1. Ear survey for students, high risk group of NIHL 2. ENT examination of deaf students 3. ENT examination of patient in local government clinic 4.
